The people in Dam Doi town of Ca Mau province are bothered about the marriage between two girls in their 20s.

Up to now, there have been two well-known marriages of same gender. One is of lesbians in Hanoi and one of gays in Sai Gon.

Nguyen Van N, 20, was the bride, from Dam Doi town. And the groom was Nguyen Thi N, 21, from Tran Van Thoi district.

The local residents saw a wedding boat from Tran Van Thoi district to Dam Doi town about a week ago. Many curious people recognized the groom and the bride. Shocked by this wedding, they informed the authority agency. 

The authority came to request both families to stop the wedding and not allow the two girls to share their lives together. 

The People’s Committee of Dam Doi town confirmed with the press that the wedding was illegal and not in compliance with the Law on Marriage and Family. They made the families understand that the marriage was illegal. After being interrupted by the authority, the couple agreed to break up. 

The mother of the groom said that during the work at a restaurant in Dam Doi town, N. fell in love with Nguyen Van N. and both girls wanted to get married. The families banned them on doing so. But being afraid that the two girls would commit suicide, they finally approved this marriage. 

According to the lawyer Tran Dinh Trien, head of Vi Dan law office, many countries in the world accept the marriage between two persons at same gender. However, Vietnam hasn’t done so. Hence, the action of the authority of Dam Doi town was legal and moral under Vietnam’s customs.
