Yesterday Nha Trang city-based Pasteur Institute confirmed that the sample taken from K, who was a student of the Thien Nga Pre-school in Cam Le District, had been tested positive with the Enterovirus 71 that caused HFMD, the department said.

K suffered high fever and rashes in the bottom on February 8 and one day later, he was admitted into the Da Nang Obstetrics-Pediatrics Center of the Da Nang Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with HFMD of level 2.

On February 10, K’s disease aggravated to level 4, a critical condition that killed him four days later, despite intensive treatment by doctors.

After K., three other students at Thien Nga have also developed HFMD symptoms and are being treated, local health authorities reported.

Health workers have sprayed antiseptic at the school and surrounding areas and the health department has reported the death to the city People’s Committee.

Today the department will inspect all facilities that provide treatment to HFMD patients to assess their treatment capability.
