Police in Ho Chi Minh City have arrested six Malaysian citizens who were using fake credit cards to shop in stores in District 1, and so far seized a total 20 counterfeit cards in their possession.

On Friday afternoon, 22-year-old Saravanan Navanithan and 19-year-old Shankaran Shamugam shopped at some jewellery and household appliance stores in District 1. However, when they offered credit cards to clear their payments the stores refused to accept the cards, doubting their credibility.

The duo then went to a computer shop in Ton That Tung Street in District 1 to purchase an Apple Ipad-2 worth VND18.5 million (US$880) and again offered to pay by credit card.

The staff members at the shop were not convinced with the credit cards being used for payment and reported the matter to the police, who asked the two Malaysian nationals to accompany them to police head quarters in District 1 for questioning.

At police headquarters both the men confessed to their wrong doing, and later police officials recovered 13 more fake credit cards in their possession.

On Saturday, police officials continued to broaden the investigation and arrested four more Malaysian nationals, who all seemed to be part of one gang.
